Are You up-to-Date on Marijuana Laws in Nevada?

Marijuana has been illegal for decades in the United States. In fact, it continues to be illegal under federal law for recreational and medicinal purposes. However, certain states have now begun to legalize cannabis — and Nevada is one of the most recent states to do so.

Since 12:01 a.m. on July 1, 2017, Nevada has made recreational marijuana legal — with specific restrictions. Adults can now purchase and use marijuana in the state.

Important Details

Under Nevada law, if you’re 21 years of age or older, you may legally purchase as much as an ounce of marijuana. You can also buy one-eighth of an ounce of marijuana edibles and concentrates.

Having legalized marijuana, Nevada will be taxing sales with a 10 percent sales tax, which Nevada officials believe will create approximately $60 million in additional revenue.

Adults are now able to purchase marijuana in a way that’s not that different from purchasing alcohol.

Voter Approval

Last November, Nevada voters approved recreational marijuana by 55 percent. The measure required the state to allow marijuana sales to begin by 2018. However, with special approval from the state tax commission, sales began six months early. Now, Nevada has joined other states — including Colorado, Oregon, Alaska, and Washington — in the legalization of recreational marijuana sales, with other states soon to join in.

Marijuana is still illegal under federal law.

It’s vital that all Nevada residents remember that the legalization of marijuana does not extend to all other states. In fact, if you’re in possession of marijuana on federal property in the state of Nevada, you can get in trouble with the law. Also, it could be considered a serious offense if you travel with marijuana to another state that hasn’t legalized it. Be careful and educate yourself about the law, and you can avoid getting into trouble.
