The cyclist claimed in the post that he couldn't see through the line of people and was unable to stop, so he raced through the least congested area he could find. The city's District Attorney's office is considering pressing charges.

]]>The Deepwater Horizon drilling rig platform exploded and burned on April 20, 2012. Of the 126 people on the drilling platform at that time, eleven were killed. Two days later the Deepwater Horizon sank. A mile beneath the ocean surface, oil from the ruptured Macondo wellhead continued to flow into the Gulf of Mexico until the middle of July. The result was an economic catastrophe and environmental contamination of unprecedented proportions in one of the most ecologically rich areas on earth.
"The department has filed initial charges in its investigation into the Deepwater Horizon disaster against an individual for allegedly deleting records relating to the amount of oil flowing from the Macondo well after the explosion that led to the devastating tragedy in the Gulf of Mexico," said Attorney General Holder. "The Deepwater Horizon Task Force is continuing its investigation into the explosion and will hold accountable those who violated the law in connection with the largest environmental disaster in U.S. history."
The DOJ explained the two charges:
"According to court documents, Mix was a drilling and completions project engineer for BP. Following the blowout, Mix worked on internal BP efforts to estimate the amount of oil leaking from the well and was involved in various efforts to stop the leak. Those efforts included, among others, Top Kill, the failed BP effort to pump heavy mud into the blown out wellhead to try to stop the oil flow. BP sent numerous notices to Mix requiring him to retain all information concerning Macondo, including his text messages."
"On or about Oct. 4, 2010, after Mix learned that his electronic files were to be collected by a vendor working for BP's lawyers, Mix allegedly deleted on his iPhone a text string containing more than 200 text messages with a BP supervisor. The deleted texts, some of which were recovered forensically, included sensitive internal BP information collected in real-time as the Top Kill operation was occurring, which indicated that Top Kill was failing."
"In addition, on or about Aug. 19, 2011, after learning that his iPhone was about to be imaged by a vendor working for BP's outside counsel, Mix allegedly deleted a text string containing more than 100 text messages with a BP contractor with whom Mix had worked on various issues concerning how much oil was flowing from the Macondo well after the blowout."
The DOJ reminds the public, "It is important to remember that a complaint is merely a charge and a defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. And adds, "If convicted, Mix faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 as to each count."

]]>The IIHS press release offers this about the joint research, "Vehicle seat designs make child restraint installation difficult; Less than a quarter of models surveyed have easy-to-use LATCH." and continues, "The system is supposed to make things easier by standardizing attachment hardware, but a new study shows that many automakers aren't paying attention to the key factors that make LATCH work. Only 21 of the 98 top-selling 2010-11 model passenger vehicles evaluated have LATCH designs that are easy to use."
"Installing a child restraint isn't always as simple as a couple of clicks and you're done," says Anne McCartt, the Institute's senior vice president for research and one of the report's authors. "Sometimes parents blame themselves when they struggle with LATCH, but oftentimes the problem lies with the vehicle, not the user."
The goal of LATCH is to increase the number of children who ride properly restrained by making child restraints easier to install. LATCH has two distinct components: top tethers which help prevent child restraints from moving too far forward during crashes, putting children at risk of head or neck injuries and lower attachments on child restraints that connect to anchors where the bottom seat cushion meets the seat back.
Researchers identified three factors associated with correct lower anchor use:
All three factors are related and are good predictors of how well people are able to correctly install child restraints. The study shows vehicles meeting the criteria were 19 times as likely to have lower anchors used correctly by the volunteers compared with vehicles that don't meet any of the criteria.
"These are things that automakers can do to improve child restraint installations, and most of them aren't hard," McCartt says. "Lower anchors can be designed so they are easy to use."
McCartt also added, "Getting kids into the right restraints for their age and size is the first step. The next is to install the seats correctly because research shows this improves protection. This is where LATCH can help."

According to the Sun story, police said, "A 2010 Nissan Altima struck the woman as it traveled west on Sahara Avenue through the intersection on a green light."

Las Vegas Fatal Crash Kills One
On Saturday morning, April 7, 2012, a collision between two vehicles resulted in the 37th fatality in Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's jurisdiction this year. An 82-year old woman was killed when a pickup truck struck her car at Cheyenne Avenue and Grand Canyon Drive.
