December 20, 2011 - According to the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety, traffic deaths dropped in the state during 2011. In Clark County, highway fatalities dropped by 25 down to 105.
Yesterday, the Las Vegas Review Journal reported, "Through Sunday, 231 people had died in Nevada traffic accidents, down 22 from the same time in 2010 and far less than the record 431 fatalities in 2006."
Of particular public interest in Las Vegas, in the aftermath of a string of fatal pedestrian accidents on city streets, are the numbers for pedestrian deaths. The Review Journal reports, "Through Sunday, 42 pedestrians had died in Nevada, more than the 41 killed in 2010. Twenty-eight of them died in Clark County, two fewer than in 2010."
Law enforcement, city government and school officials are working to raise public awareness and offer opportunities for students to learn about pedestrian safety. In addition, the Safe Community Partnership and the Transportation Research Center at UNLV sponsored a town hall meeting to address the questions and concerns of interested individuals.
