Police say the accident involving a UPS truck that struck and killed a retired school teacher on November 8 was the 60th fatal crash this year; and the 19th pedestrian death in Las Vegas Metro Police (LVMPD) jurisdiction. This deadly accident is the latest in a string of crashes that resulted in fatalities or critical injuries to pedestrians.
Recently, three young girls were hit in a crosswalk, killing one and injuring the other two, one critically. Also, in separate accidents, a teenage boy and a 12-year-old girl were struck and killed in vehicle crashes.
As a result of this string of fatal accidents, many questions about pedestrian safety in Las Vegas have been raised. To "facilitate discussion and answer questions" on pedestrian safety issues, the Safe Community Partnership and the Transportation Research Center at UNLV are sponsoring a Pedestrian Safety Town Hall Meeting tomorrow night, November 16, 2011, at 6:30 p.m. in the UNLV Science and Engineering Building Auditorium. The meeting is open to the public. Read more: @LVMPD.
