On Thursday morning, July 14, 2011, a Las Vegas man was struck by a pickup truck and suffered fatal injuries. This fatal pedestrian accident occurred near Bruce Street on Flamingo Road.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported, "Police said they are investigating the fatal accident, which occurred shortly after 5 a.m., when a 2001 Ford driven by Steven Phelps, 58, of Las Vegas, struck the pedestrian as the pickup changed lanes while heading west on Flamingo."

On Saturday, July 23, 2011, another pedestrian accident took the life of a 28 year-old man and seriously injured a 41 year-old woman, both of Las Vegas, as they crossed the street outside a crosswalk. A car struck the pair on Naples Drive, just east of Paradise Road. The Review-Journal reports that this was the 37th  traffic-related fatality investigated by Las Vegas police this year.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) through its Fatality Analysis Reporting System, in the state of Nevada during 2009 (the latest year for which data is available online) there were 35 fatal pedestrian accidents. Such fatalities can be the result of pedestrian carelessness, driver inattention or driver distraction. The details of the cause of this accident are unknown to us at the time of this posting.
