Just before 10 a.m. this morning, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said a bicyclist was killed and the driver of a car was injured in a collision in the southwest valley. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, "The cyclist went through the car's windshield, injuring the woman driver, who was then involved in another collision, police said."

In fatal bicycle crashes, motorists often fail to see bicyclists prior to collisions, however in this instance the Las Vegas Sun reports, "Police said a woman was driving a car northbound on Decatur while a man on a bicycle was westbound on Tropicana. The bicyclist failed to yield to oncoming traffic and the car collided with the man, investigators said."

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in Nevada during 2009 (the most recent year for which data is available online) there were 42 non-motorist fatalities in roadway crashes. Of those, 6 were pedalcyclists. NHTSA has designated that category for those using non-motorized vehicles.
